MEETING PROGRAM

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

As time runs, specially with recent global events, is necessary a rapid evolution of the surgeon role in the management of patients with medical and surgical conditions. As part of that evolution, new technologies and knowledge to improve the diagnosis, management and treatment of these conditions and their complications are developed. As part of our mission as the Puerto Rico Chapter of the American College of Surgeons we are committed to provide education to our surgical community in order to maintain adequate competency. It’s for that reason, that this year we developed and ambitious and comprehensive program, in person for the first time in three years, tailored to provide a diverse range of topics to fulfill our community educational needs. Through this meeting, our Chapter will be able to serve one of our most important mission of being surgical educators within our community.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the meeting, the participant should be able to:

  • Endocrine/Urology/Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery: The learners should understand upcoming changes in the care of surgical endocrine and head and neck patients, and understand the indications and procedure of transperineal fusion prostate biopsy.
  • Trauma/Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery: The learners should be able to update their care strategies for sleep disorders in surgical patients, and complicated burns patients. Also understand new concepts in the role of damage control in emergency medicine.
  • Education/Leadership: The learners will should be able to learn new strategies to choose residents in a pass/fail world, to disclose surgical error, and to keep bias free evaluations and interview process. Also, learners will be exposed to ideas of how to use compassion as strategy to mitigate moral injury in Healthcare Organizations.
  • GI Surgery/Colorectal/Bariatrics: The learners will update their knowledge in metabolic surgery. Also, they will update their strategies in management of anorectal emergencies, and how to prevent colorectal anastomotic leak.
  • Vascular: The learners will update recent guidelines in DVT management. Also, they will understand transcarotid artery revascularization.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery/Hernias: The learners will have an update in the critical issues on laparoscopic ventral hernias repair, and learn new techniques and strategies in the role of endoscopic management in bariatric surgery complications.
  • Surgical Oncology/GI Surgery/Breast: The learners will have an update in the management of endocrine oncology surgery, new paradigms in gastric cancer treatment, and axillary management in breast cancer.
